DEMO:
Start With Your Best Guess. Rather than agonize over mixing or choosing just the right color at the start, begin by making your best guess. Whatever your choice, you can adjust it easily in the next stages of the painting. Beginning this way not only removes much of the initial stress but can also create richer, more interesting color in the end.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Michael Chesley Johnson paints the American Southwest, coastal Maine and the Canadian Maritimes in oil and pastel. Challenging outdoor events such as the Grand Canyon “Celebration of Art” have invited him to participate again and again. An author of art instruction books and videos, he writes frequently for The Artist’s Magazine, Pastel Journal, PleinAir Magazine and Watercolor Artist. Also a much-sought-after teacher, he teaches plein air painting workshops across the US. His latest book is Outdoor Study to Studio: Take Your Plein Air Painting to the Next Level, which is available at Amazon.com. He is an Invited Artist and on the faculty of the 2022 Plein Air Convention & Expo in Santa Fe.
