Arizona Plein Air Painters Members ONLY are invited to participate in the inaugural:

PLEIN AIR AT THE FAIR

A ONE-DAY JUDGED CONTEST HELD ON-SITE DURING THE ARIZONA STATE FAIR!

Bring your art supplies and artistic talent to paint on
location within the fairgrounds during the Arizona State Fair.
En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air,” and refers
to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Plein
air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by
incorporating natural light, color and movement into their works

Rules
1. Open to all artists ages 18 or over that is a current member of Arizona Plein Air Painters.
2. You may bring up to three (3) blank canvases, paper or other surfaces to create on.
3. Maximum size is 16 inches x 20 inches.
4. Surfaces must be blank and cannot have any prior sketches or markings.
5. No working from photographs.
6. The back of your surfaces will be stamped upon check-in by Fair staff.
7. You must bring all your own art supplies: Easel, paints, brushes, etc.
8. Only one (1) artwork per exhibitor can be submitted into the contest for judging.
9. Submitted entry must have wire on the back for proper hanging.
10. All entries must be unsigned for judging.
11. Submitted entries must remain on view during exhibit period.
12. We reserve the right to disqualify works deemed objectionable. All Artwork must be family friendly.

• Maximum of 20 participants accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
• Processing fees include one (1) Fair admission ticket and one (1) parking pass for the day of event.
• Parking, Fair admission ticket and detailed information will be sent prior to contest date.

• Exhibitors are also welcome to visit the Fair (at their own expense) prior to contest day to choose subject area. However, no photos or sketches of the subject will be allowed on contest day.

• 10% commission is taken by the Arizona State Fair.

Judge
Anton Nowels has exhibited both representational and abstract work in Arizona and Southern Utah. Recently
his work was juried into the American Impressionist Society’s 20th Annual National Exhibition at the
Salmagundi Club in New York. Nowels is a two-time Guest Artist at the Thunderbird Foundation’s Maynard
Dixon Country event in Mt. Carmel, Utah. In 2019 he was the best in show winner at the Arizona Plein Air
Painters juried members show. In 2017, Anton won First Place at the Bisbee Plein Air Festival. He was the
Second Place winner at the prestigious Scottsdale Artists’ School’s Best and Brightest Show in 2018.
Additionally, Anton won Second Place in the Sonoran Plein Air Festival’s inaugural show in 2018.
Nowels has been practicing art since 2000 and had his first solo show at age 24 on Grand Avenue in
Downtown Phoenix. In 2007, he was juried into a solo exhibition at Burton Barr Public Library’s Central
Gallery. Nowels continued to show work in downtown Phoenix in several locations, including the Herberger
Theater Center and First Studios, before returning to Arizona State University to finish his BA in 2008. His
work is experimental by nature and is reflective of his Interdisciplinary Art and Performance degree.
His goal is to develop outdoor paintings using the Impressionists’ approaches taught by Charles Hawthorne,
Henry Hensche, and Sergei Bongart. Nowels is a workshop Instructor at Scottsdale Artists’ School, an
Associate Member of Oil Painters of America, a member of the American Impressionist Society, and a Juried
Member of Arizona Plein Air Painters.
